A luxuriant destination, with infinite forests and sinuous rivers folwing towards the ocean. Madre de Dios is a department where there is plentiful of life in every corner. Puerto Maldonado, the capital city, is a necessary step to enter a few national parks and reserves of the area. It has been, during different periods, an important rubber, wood, gold and oil exploitation center. Two of the main current economical activities of the department are ecotourism and chestnut collecting. The rich biodiversity is captivating, surrounded by swamps, orchids, lupuna trees, mahogany wood and aguajes (palm trees) up to 30 meter high. A large variety of species lives there, such as toucans, macaws, parrots, herons, tapirs and turtles, and the refuge of the giant otter and the black caiman, both in danger of extintion. Its rivers, Tambopata and Madre de Dios, constitute a unique destination in the world, allowing an authentic contact with nature while interacting with ancestral Amazonian cultures.

On that day, we will walk for 20 minutes in the jungle until we arrive at the Canopy Tower, a network of high scaffolding among 30-meter-high trees. It was built with steel wire-cables, so that it is possible to climb easily. These passages also have rails on each side for your safety. We will regularly find resting platforms from which not only will we be able to appreciate a stunning view of the Tambopata river and the top of the trees, but this is also an excellent spot to observe birds living at those heights, such as toucans, parrots and macaws. From there, a catamaran and an Indian rower will take us on a quiet tour, on the lake, to appreciate the lake fauna at its peak. We will search for caimans, riverside birds, strange pigs, and if we are lucky, we will be able to see the river wolf family (seen by 60% of our visitors), known as the biggest freshwater otters of the world. Its major peak of activity goes from sunrise to 8 or 9 a.m.
Parrot Clay Lick: Only twenty minutes away from the lodging, we wil find this place. From a hiding place, we will be able to observe, about twenty meters away from them, how tens of parrots and parakeets descend to feed on the clay from the clay lick. The clay lick can be visited early in the morning, late in the morning or in the afternoon, depending on when their is the most activity.
Ethnobotanical TourTwenty minutes away going downstream by boat, we will find the Ñape Center. This center is a communal association that produces medicines made from the medicinal plants that grow in this ethnobotanical center and administers them to the people who come as far as there to heal. In a trail system, there are the plants used for medicinal purposes as well as other purposes, such as construction or transportation.
Night hike: We will have the opportunity to walk during the night, which is the activity time of most of the mammals, although they are hard to see. The frogs are much more common, with shapes and sounds as extravagant as their natural stories.
