PUERTO MALDONADO - GENERAL INFORMATION

Puerto Maldonado is a city in the South-East of Peru, capital of the Madre de Dios department, located on the banks of the Madre de Dios river, formerly called Amaru Mayo. This is one of the main trade centers of Amazonia. It has the official title of capital of biodiversity in Peru, by merit of important searches on the flora and fauna found in the forests of the department, in particular in Manu.

Madre de Dios is a department with luxuriant virgin rainforests and enchanting sceneries. It might be the least humanly altered and eroded area of Amazonia.

This is a land of narrow and slow rivers and beautiful lagoons surrounded y a luxuriant vegetation. The main groups estalished in the region are the huarayos, mashcos, piros, amahuacas, yamanahuas, amaracaes and machiguengas.

The main appeals are the Biodiversidad vantage point, built in the city center and from which an amazing panorama of the jungle and rivers joining due to the urban progress can be admired. The much-touted "macaw clay licks" also are very close to the Tambopata river, the beautiful Sandoval lake, the Monkey Island, the "Infierno" Indian Community, the beauty of the scenery from the harbour master's office and, of course, the happy and friendly people in Puerto Maldonado.
